Let me explain: I experienced spo n- taneous trances or states of absorption in my childhood (at times in t he classroom), out- of -b ody experiences throughout my pre-adolescence, and some deep mystical states via psychedelics in my last year of high school. In addition, by my seventeenth birthday I had became aware of a number of energetic blocks in my body and associated psychological neurotic patterns. ![]() By t hé second year óf my ps ychoIogy degree, I Iaunched a personal séarc h through autódidactic study. My natural inclination for dee p (i.e., beneath the surface) explanations drew me to psychoanalysis: I first read most of Freuds Collected Works and from there I went on to r ead Jung and Fromm. That was my first contact with Ea stern p hilosophies (where I found non - pathological accounts of my non-ordinary experiences), which in turn led me to Alan Watts, Abraham Ma slow, humanistic psychology, and eventually to transpersonal psychology. At that time, I also sta rted practicing meditation regularly, first with a Hindu group called Brahm a Kum a- ris and t hen with a Korean Zen teacher. T wo p i- votal ev ents happened: f irst, my encounter with the ps y- chologist Oc tavio G arcia, who was teaching transpe r- sonal psychology in a l ocal yoga cen ter in Barcelona. He was not only the first clinical psychologist interested in transpersonal psyc hology I had ever met, but also a s e- rious spiritual practitioner who clearly walked his talk.
